Have you found that water-based products are more effective than oil-based ones?

Let me clarify the question a bit. When I mean water-based products, I mean ones that have water as the first ingredient, or second/third if the ingredients preceding water are water-soluble and/or are easily miscible with water (i.e butylene glycol). Therefore, all other products that don’t fulfill the above-mentioned prerequisites are considered oil-based. This includes products that have silicones … Continue reading

What skin care product do you go through the quickest? Slowest? Why?

I probably go through my toner the quickest since I use the same one day and night. I also tend to slather it on. The “slowest” products would be my set of four “moisturizers” that I sort of put on rotation. And since each product contains 1 oz, I finish them all at around the same … Continue reading

What type of product do you think is still missing on the current market?

I have yet to find an excellent aqueous vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid), E, and ferulic acid treatment that’s very lightweight, appropriate for oily skin types, and packaged in a pump bottle!! The Skinceuticals version is good, but it’s also super expensive and packaged in a dropper bottle! WTF?!? Haha, okay. /endrant I’d also like something with high levels of green tea (ECGC), pomegranate, … Continue reading

What do you guys think of “silicone entrapment?”

Recently, I read an article on FutureDerm and replied to a few comments asking about the idea of how silicones trap active ingredients, preventing them from reaching the skin. Here’s a breakdown of what happened: Nicki of FutureDerm fame stated: “While beneficial skin care ingredients can have some documented effects in cosmetics with a silicone base, the … Continue reading

What topic in skin care is the most confusing for you?

I’d say trying to properly evaluate a skin care product is the most confusing thing to do. Like I said in my Product Review Rubric, ingredient-based reviews can only go so far. There are several limitations and doubts that I have when reviewing a product. Some things like: How much of an ingredient is actually … Continue reading

Do you think Asian-brands or products marketed toward the Asian community are better than their Western counterparts?

I recently had a reader ask me if Asian cleansers are better than Western ones. Here’s what I told him: “I have to emphasize that products geared towards these Asian countries don’t have some type of “monopoly” or exclusive rights to any skin care ingredient. Most of the companies that come out with these products … Continue reading

What skin care product do you really want to try next? Why?

The next category of products I want to try is a water-soluble vitamin C serum, such as the Skinceuticals CE Ferulic (which I probably won’t just because it’s SO expensive), or various alternatives that Nicki from FutureDerm suggested HERE. Most likely, I’d go with the Timeless dupe since Nicki likes it (in a completely personal way) more than the … Continue reading

Beauty-Related Things I’ve Pronounced Incorrectly

I thought we’d do something fun and interesting today! From what I can remember, I’ve said FOUR beauty-related things wrong for the LONGEST time. I seriously can’t believe no one pointed them out to me. But I guess that makes sense since I don’t really talk about skin care in real life. It’s just you Internet … Continue reading

Do you apply foundation in a way that minimizes movement of your sunscreen?

If I’m going out during the day, as in when there’s ANY significant sunlight, I’ll wear sunscreen under my foundation. This includes if I go out at like 6:00 pm and the sun sets at 7:00 pm haha. Yes, I know I’m crazy. For reference, I wear a mineral-sunscreen mixed with a bit of mattifying … Continue reading

How do you test new products?

Because I’m so particular and OCD about reviewing products based on their ingredient lists before actually trying said products, I don’t have to test them for too long before deciding whether or not they’re suitable. I will typically try a new product for two weeks to determine if it fits into my routine and that it doesn’t trigger … Continue reading
