Have you found that water-based products are more effective than oil-based ones?

Let me clarify the question a bit. When I mean water-based products, I mean ones that have water as the first ingredient, or second/third if the ingredients preceding water are water-soluble and/or are easily miscible with water (i.e butylene glycol). Therefore, all other products that don’t fulfill the above-mentioned prerequisites are considered oil-based. This includes products that have silicones … Continue reading

Should L-Ascorbic Acid and Glycolic Acid Be Used Together?

A while back, several readers brought this article to my attention. In it, the author Dr. Cynthia Bailey states that, “… vitamin C and glycolic acid can’t both be on the skin at the same time anyway.” The readers wanted to know if there was any truth to this statement. Is There Any Evidence of a … Continue reading

Spotlight on: Thioctic Acid or Alpha Lipoic Acid

Known as the UNIVERSAL antioxidant (given that it’s both water- and lipid- soluble), this antioxidant is present in virtually every type of living cell in the human body as it is manufactured in mitochondria. After initial synthesis, ALA is covalently bonded through lysyl residues to various enzyme complexes in order to facilitate important redox reactions. Systemically, ALA and its reduced counterpart … Continue reading

What type of product do you think is still missing on the current market?

I have yet to find an excellent aqueous vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid), E, and ferulic acid treatment that’s very lightweight, appropriate for oily skin types, and packaged in a pump bottle!! The Skinceuticals version is good, but it’s also super expensive and packaged in a dropper bottle! WTF?!? Haha, okay. /endrant I’d also like something with high levels of green tea (ECGC), pomegranate, … Continue reading

Spotlight On: L-Ascorbic Acid

Here’s a short overview of one of the most popular and widely used ingredients in skin care, vitamin C! http://www.futurederm.com/2012/07/05/spotlight-on-l-ascorbic-acid/ Let me know what you think! What else would you guys like to know about vitamin C?

What skin care product do you really want to try next? Why?

The next category of products I want to try is a water-soluble vitamin C serum, such as the Skinceuticals CE Ferulic (which I probably won’t just because it’s SO expensive), or various alternatives that Nicki from FutureDerm suggested HERE. Most likely, I’d go with the Timeless dupe since Nicki likes it (in a completely personal way) more than the … Continue reading

When is the price right?

Although I had promised readers that I wouldn’t be writing any new posts until January, a recent discussion compelled me to do an additional post on this: How much does price affect the efficacy and quality of skin care products? With the holiday shopping season upon us, you may be thinking about picking up that expensive cream or … Continue reading

Chanel Hydramax+Active Active Moisture Gel Cream

Chanel Hydramax+Active Active Moisture Gel Cream: ($72 for 1.7 oz) Positives: I really tried my best, but all I could find were infinitesimal amounts of vitamin E and two forms of vitamin C. However, they are all listed after the preservatives, which means that they will do absolutely nothing for the skin. There are also low … Continue reading
